Neuropychology Of Emotion Flashcards
Neruoranatomy pf emotion in the limbic system
Emotions are a result of network of direct and trans-synaptic connections
No single limbic system
But rather network of connections
Appraisal occurs in
Orbitofrontal cortex
Amygdala
Orbitofrontal cortex: appraisal
Input: ventral cortical streams- a pathway that carries visual information from the primary visual cortex to the temporal lobe
This is identity
Medial: reward
Activated by subjective pleasantness
Lateral: punishment/ non reward
Negative reward prediction error
Expectation of punishment
Output: carried out by anterior cingulate
Amygdala: appraisal
Older brain: overshadowed by OFC
Conditioned responses to harmful stimuli
Facial expression regulation
Little involved in subjective emotional experience
Slower response in reversal learning tasks
Cingulate cortex- action outcome learning
Anterior: outcome
• Supracallosal: punishment/non-reward data from lateral OFC
• Pregenual: reward signals from medial OFC
Posterior: action
• Input from parietal lobes (spatial/action
related information)
• Output: hippocampus
Mid: action
• Output to premotor areas (eg SMA)
Ventral medial prefrontal cortex: reward- related decision-making
Synaptic networks signal value of chosen offer
Autonomic responses
Modulated by:
-OFC via anteroventral insula and
subgenual cingulate cortex
-Amygdala
• Hypothalamus
• Periaqueductal grey
Feedback from autonomic output not needed for emotional behavior/feelings
