Neurophysiology Of Emotion-DSA Flashcards
Two Types of Fear
Innate
-loud noises are a great example
Learned
-from watching someone else or from personal experience
Two sensory inputs to create fear in Amygdala
Direct thalamo-amygdaloid pathway to lateral nuc
-rapid response
Indirect thalamo-cortico-amygdaloid pathway to lateral nuc
-later responses of fear
In damage to the amygdala, can fear be perceived?
Nope!
Anger
Mediated through amygdala using D2 receptors
Inhibition requires
-neocortex, VM hypothalamic nuclei
Avoidance
Uses lateral posterior hypothalamus, dorsal midbrain, entorhinal cortex
Sadness
Anterior cingulate cortex
-strongly activated when recalling sad events
Disgust
Uses insular cortex/putamen
-processes and recognizes social cues
Surprise
Parahippocampal Gyrus
-important in detecting novelty
Cortical COntrol of Emtiontion
Using the Anterior Cingulate Cortex
-ventral=affective, dorsal=cognitive
Ventromedial PFC gets input from?
Amygdala, hippocampus, and dorsolateral PFC
Three Roles of Cortical Control of emotion
Reward processing (orbitofrontal) -link new stimulus to primary reward
Integration of Body Signals (VM PFC)
-gut feeling
Top down Regulation
-delayed gratification
What does the lateral nucleus of the amygdala do?
It integrates the inputs of learned fear
Where does the lateral nucleus of the amygdala send the next information to?
The basal and intercalated nuclei
-required for additional processing
What does the central nucleus of the amygdala do after it gets info from the basal and lateral nucleus?
Decides what responses are required and relays info to hypothalamus for physiological responses
