Neurophysiology Flashcards
1
Q
Investigating muscle and nerves
A
NCS: sensory function
2
Q
How does it work
A
- electrical stimulation makes the outside of the nerve negative
- inside is thus positive by comparison: triggers an A.P which moves down the nerve
- record this with sticky electrodes
- measure size of response and its speed
3
Q
What is NCS used for
A
Entrapments
4
Q
EMG
A
- records activity of motor units
5
Q
Myasthenia Gravis
A
Affects postsynaptic neurons
6
Q
How do we investigate the brain
A
EEGs
- mainly for patients with seizures
- electrodes placed in specific locations on the scalp
7
Q
What is an intra-cranial EEG
A
- Used in patients being worked up for epilepsy surgery
8
Q
Frontal lobe seizure
A
- brief
- fencing posture
9
Q
Gyratory seizures
A
- rotastes body around at 180 degrees
10
Q
Somatosensory evoked potentials
A
Looks at the integrity of dorsal columns. Stimulate peripheral nerves
11
Q
Main uses
A
- ) MS
2. ) Intra-operative monitoring e.g. spinal cord surgery
12
Q
Visual evoked potentials
A
Looking at visual pathways
13
Q
Transcranial magnetic stimulation
A
Record time it takes for magnetic potential to reach muscle
