neuroimaging Flashcards
What are the neuroimaging techniques?
- ) plain x rays
- ) CT (computed tomography)
- ) MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
- ) Cerebral angiography
- ) Nuclear medicine
When would you do a skull X-ray?
To check the skull after neurosurgery (generally rarely used)
Advantages of using CT scanning
- ) Better than MRI for demonstrating bone + calcification
2. ) Quicker scan times than MRI
Disadvantages of using CT scanning
- ) Dose of radiation. I CT head = 100 chest X-rays
2. ) Requires iodinated contrast media: potential allergic reaction
Advantages of using MRI scanning
- ) No ionising radiation
- ) Multiple planes possible
- ) Excellent anatomical detail
Disadvantages of using MRI scanning
- ) Contrast injection may be required
- ) Strong magnetic field
- ) Noisy + claustrophobic
- ) Longer scan times than CT
What strength magnets are generally used in MRI’s
1.5 or 3 tesla
What plane is MRI done in
Axial (transverse) plane
What is the coronal plane
Like looking at the back of someone’s head
What is the sagittal plane
Like looking at someone’s brain at the side
What’s a problem with having an image with a sagittal plane?
Not a symmetrical image
What else can you use MRI for?
1.) To look at white matter fibre tracts
What is nuclear medicine
- Uses radioactive tracers to assess bodily functions
Disadvantages of nuclear medicine
- Image resolution is very poor compared to CT
- No grey/white matter differentiation
Advantages of nuclear medicine
- Can see blood flow (used to see frontotemporal dementia)
- Can look at specific ligands
