Neuroanatomy 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Components of blood brain barrier
A
- Tight junctions
- No fenestrations in endothelium
- Astrocyctic glia that have end feet: blood vessels are essentially coated in end feet so they no free flow of molecules
- Pericytes: regulate BBB
2
Q
Blood supply
A
- Internal carotid arteries (common carotid split into internal and external) (anterior supply)
- Vertebral arteries: uniting into the basilar artery (posterior supply)
3
Q
Most common location for a stroke
A
Middle cerebral artery
4
Q
Venous drainage
A
Through the deep cerebral veins
5
Q
Features of venous drainage
A
- internal cerebral vein
- straight sinus
6
Q
How does venous drainage work
A
Veins drain into sinuses: channels between two layers of dura
7
Q
Spinal cord blood supply
A
- Anterior surface: large spinal artery and large spinal vein
8
Q
Ventricular system
A
- Ventricles 1 and 2 = lateral ventricles. Filled with CSF.
- CSF drains from foramen of Monroe into the 3rd ventricle
- foramen of magendie and luschka
9
Q
Ependymal cell function
A
Glial cells
10
Q
Where does CSF come from
A
The choroid plexus
11
Q
How does CSF drain
A
Via the arachnoid granulations/peripheral nerves to lymphatics
12
Q
Features of the anterior brainstem
A
- pyramids: contain corticospinal fibres
13
Q
Features of the posterior brainstem
A
- inferior and superior colliculi
