neuropharm Flashcards
What does botox do and what is it used for?
Prevent Ach release at alpha motor neuron
Spasticity
Migraine
Dystonia
abnormal eye movement
starts working 48-72 hrs.
What is baclophen and what is it used for?
bind to GABA
block Ca from coming to presynaptic terminal -> reduce NT release and hyperpolarization
used for spasticity
SCI
MS
Patho of alzheimers?
excess tau/ inadequate clearance.
excess amyloid production
there is brain shrinkage/ loss of cholinergic neuron in frontal cortex
amyloid plaque
neurofibrillary tangles. all from tau.
Tx of Alzheimers?
block Ach-ase to make more Ach. present.
via:
AchEI
Glutamade modulator: antagonize NMDA
Behavior treatment: environemtn/mood (SSRI) .agitation.(neuroleptic)
L-Dopa/ Carbidopa?
replace Dopamine
inhibit conversion of Ldopa to Dopamine outside of Brain.
Antichollinergic
Dec CNS Ach. and Tresore balance of Dopamine and Ach.
Different between L-dopa and Dopamine?
Pure dopamine won’t cross BBB but L-dopa will
Why is Carbidopa added to L dopa?
Carbidopa inhibities enzymes that break down L-dopa.
Side effects of AEDs?
Sedation
Drowsy
Depressed
Dizzy
that can be used to treat bipolar
neuropathic pain
migraine.
AED is antiepilleptic used for seizure.
Positive screening test for Intrathecal baclofen?
Drop in spasticity scale
hypotonia w/o resp. difficulty.
What are ways to treat parkinson’s?
Dopamine agonist
L-dopa w/ carbidopa
Anticholinergics.
