Chemo Flashcards
Neoadjuvant therapy
Cancer is too large to eliminate initially w surgery so therapy used to shrink followed by radiation/surgery
Adjuvant therapy?
Pts Dx with cancer and have surgery to remove it
Side effects of chemo?
Malnourished Nausea/diarrhea Alopecia GI damage Fatigue/pain Sterility Cardiotoxicity Depression in growth Organ toxicity
Why will PT Tx someone with Plant alkaloid (Taxanes)
Produces parasthesia
Foot/wrist drop
Tyrosine kinase inhibitors
Work inside cell to inhibit tyrosine kinase receptors
Inhibit the signaling system
Mammaliam target of rapamycin?
Prevent MTOR from activating signaling pathways involved in angiogenesis and cell growth.
Cancer cant feed itself
Serious side effect of anthracycline ?
Cardiotoxicity. Pts get no more than 4 doses
What are mabs?
Monoclonal Antibodies?
Flag cancer cells for destruction
Block growth signals and receptors
Prevent angiogenesis
What doe cytokines do?
Stimulate T cell growth and help get them revved up
Boost immune system
What do cancer vaccines do?
Delay/stop cancer growth. / stop recurrance
Shrink tumor/ eliminate cancer cells
Autologous: From pt-specific materials
Allogenic: Not pt-specific.
Colony Stimulating factors?
Regenerate neutrophil recovery following myelosuppressive therapy to minimize extent of nadir and reduce infection
What is neutropenia?
Low white blood cell count
Most common side effect of chemo
When should chemo be held?
Neutorphil below 500 mm^3 or platelet below 100,000
Do not treat if u are sick
Risk factors for neutropenia
Age Female Malnutrition Open wounds Comorbidities Hx of having it Type of chemo Dose intensity Radiation
Signs of infection you should look for in chemo patients?
GI: mucositis/diarrhea
Respiratory Tract: Cough/dyspnea/abnormal breath
Urinary: Dysuria/frequency/urgent/color
Redness tender/warm
Flu-like/fever/chills/fatigue
