Neuropathic Bladder Flashcards
What are the two sphincters that control micturition?
The internal and external urethral sphincters
What is the internal sphincter made up of?
Smooth muscle and is involuntary
What is the external sphincter made up of?
Skeletal muscle and it is voluntary
Define overflow incontinence
Overflow incontinence is defined as when the bladder is filled to capacity but the pons centres are not functioning and so dribbling happens
Define Urge incontinence
Is defined as when a small amount of urine causes micturition
Where is the external sphincter located?
It is located in the urogenital diaphragm
What are the receptors found on the detrusor muscle?
M3 or muscarinic receptors or B3
What are the receptors found on the external sphincter?
Nicotinic Receptors
What is the receptor found on the internal sphincter?
Alpha 1 receptor
What type of nerve is the pudendal nerve(S2-S4)?
Somatic nerve
What nerve is fired when we try and hold in urine?
Pudendal nerve
The thoracolumbar part of the spine(T11-L2) is
sympathetic
Failure to empty is associated with:
LMN neuropathic bladder
Failure to store is associated with
UMN neuropathic bladder
After how long does spinal shock occur?
After 24-72 hours
