What is a simple cyst caused by?
Local ischaemia and tubular obstruction
What does a simple cyst look like on ultrasound?
- oval or round
- smooth outline and no anechoic(black on US)
- clear echo enhancement of posterior wall
What are the management plans for a simple cyst?
- Cyst puncture and send for cytology
- Cyst aspiration and scleropathy
- Open or laparoscopic marsupialisation/excision of cyst
Describe a complex cyst on Ultrasound:
Irregular outline with septa
And with presence of internal echoes
What is polycystic kidney disease?
It is a autosomal dominant hereditary condition
What are the symptoms of Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease?
- 60-70% of pt. Get HPT
- Bilateral renal mass sometimes
- Pain in flank-ureteric obstruction,haemorrhage, cyst stretching over renal pelvis, infection
What is the Rx of ADPKD?
- Nephrectomy and renal transplantation
- Treat the HPT
- Dialysis
- Genetic testing for children
Medullary kidney sponge is a:
Autosomal recessive defect
Where does the medullary sponge kidney have pathology?
In the distal collecting tubules of the renal medulla
