Neurons Flashcards
Axon
Transmits information from dendrites to terminal buttons
Neuron
Cell in the nervous system. Receives, processes, and transmits information. Approximately 100billion
Dendrites
Receiver of information
Terminal Button
Sender of information. Contains neurotransmitters
Soma
Cell body that contains the nucleus. Housed in the dendrites
Myelin Sheath
Protects the axon. Matures in mid twenties. Allows for faster transmission of information
Nodes of Ranvier
Gap between different parts of Myelin Sheath
Classes of Neurons
Sensory, Motor, and Interneurons
Sensory Neuron
Receptors to your central nervous system
Motor Neuron
Central nervous system to your muscles
Interneurons
Do both
Glia Cells
They’re for guiding new neutrons to correct location. Remove dead Neurons. Remove toxins. Form Myelin Sheath
Action Potential
Neuron fires - enacts a response. Combination of different inputs arriving at each dendrite. If combined activation is above the threshold the Neuron fires. 70 is rest state. -55 creates action potential
Excitatory Input
To fire.
Inhibitory Input
To not fire
