Brain Flashcards
Somatic nervous system
Apart of the peripheral nervous system,
It’s the central nervous system to the skeletal muscles and skin
Peripheral nervous system
Connects body sensory receptors to central nervous system,
And then to muscles and glands
Autonomic nervous system
Apart of the peripheral nervous system,
Controls involuntary motor responses,
It goes from the sensory to the central nervous system to smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, glands
Sympathetic nervous system
Apart of the autonomic nervous system,
It governs responses to emergency situations,
fight or flight scenarios
Shuts down digestive system, increase blood flow to muscles, oxygen transfer increases and heart rate increases
Parasympathetic nervous system
Linked to autonomic nervous system,
Calms you back down after an emergency response
Central nervous system
Is your brain and your spinal cord,
Integrates and co-ordinate body function,
Limbic system
Controls your emotions and motivated behaviour
Hunger, reproduction, body temperature, blood sugar levels, blood pressure
Cerebral cortex
Complex mental processes,
The outer layer of the cerebrum.
Thalamus
Relays sensory information to the cerebral cortex
Cerebellum
Learned movements,
Ballet postures, walking etc.
Equilibrium - balance (sorta thing)
Hypothalamus
Manages bodies internal state,
Bodies internal equilibrium,
Involved in motivated behaviour - eating, drinking
Regulates activity of the endocrine system
Brain stem
Heart, lungs, alertness levels and warning systems.
Spinal cord
Pathway for neural fibres travelling to and from the brain
PON’s
Are located in the brain stem,
Provides inputs to other structures in the brain stem to cerebellum
Medulla
Breathing, blood pressure, heart beat,
Located at the top of the spinal cord
Reticular formation
Arouses brain to new stimuli,
Extensive communication to the thalamus,
Regulates biological cycles - waking patterns
Amygdala
Generation and expression of emotions,
Reception of emotions,
(Damaging this part, makes the person unable to register others emotions)
Emotional memory - remembers different emotions
Cerebrum
Two thirds of total brain mass. Regulates higher cognitive ability and emotions. Contains cerebral cortex and cerebral hemispheres
Frontal Lobe
Cognitive activities. Planning, decision making, motor control. Broca’s area is here.
Broca’s area
Contained in frontal lobe. Responsible for speech production
Parietal Lobe
Behind central sulcus. Sensation of touch, temp, and pain. Contains motor cortex and somatosensory cortex.
Motor cortex
Voluntary muscles
Somatosensory Cortex
Processes sensory inputs
Temporal Lobe
Below lateral fissure and is responsible for hearing and speech processing. Wernickes area.
