Neurons Flashcards
1
Q
Neurons
A
Basic building blocks of the nervous system
2
Q
Parts of a neuron + functions (6 parts)
A
- Cell body = Cell’s life-support center.
- Dendrites = Receives messages from other cells.
- Axon = Passes messages away from cell body to other neurons, muscles, or glands
- Neural impulse = Electrical signal travelling down axon
- Terminal branches of axon = Form junctions with other cells
- Myelin sheath = Covers axon of some neurons and helps speed neural impulses
3
Q
Sensory neurons
A
Neurons that carry incoming information from the sensory receptors to the brain and spinal cord. They have long dendrites and short axons.
4
Q
Relay neurons
A
These connect the sensory neurons to the motor or other relay neurons. They have short dendrites and short axons.
5
Q
Motor neurons
A
Neurons that carry outgoing information from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles and glands. They have short dendrites and long axons.
