neuronal communication Flashcards
what are the reasons for communication systems?
to receive information (from internal + external environment), process information (make decisions based on the information received), respond (measured & appropriate)
how does cell signalling work?
there is communication between cells by means of a chemical. signal molecules bind to complementary cell surface receptors and binding triggers a response within a cell
what is the central nervous system (CNS) made of?
brain, spinal cord and nerves
what is the peripheral nervous system (PNS) made of?
nerves
what is the human nervous system made of?
CNS & PNS
How is information passed along neurones?
through an action potential (nerve impulses)
what are neurones?
specialised cells that transmit electrical impulses
what are nerves?
a discrete bundle of several thousand neurone axons
