Neuromuscular System Flashcards
All-or-none Principle
A stronger action potential cannot produce a stronger contraction.
Tetanus
The maximal amount of force the motor unit can develop.
Slow-twitch; high fatigue resistance and aerobic capacity; low force production.
Type I Muscle Fibers
Fast-twitch; lower fatigue resistance and aerobic capacity; intermediate to high force production.
Type II Muscle Fibers
Motor Units are composed of… that…
muscle fibers with specific morphological and physiological characteristics … determine their functional capacity.
What 2 factors determine force output of a muscle?
Frequency of activation of individual motor units OR the number of motor units activated.
Proprioceptors
Specialized sensory receptors located within joints, muscles, and tendons.
What do proprioceptors do?
Provide the central nervous system with information needed to maintain muscle tone and perform complex coordinated movements.
Muscle spindles
Proprioceptors that consist of several modified muscle fibers enclosed in a sheath of connective tissue.
What are Golgi Tendon Organs (GTO’s) & where are they located?
Proprioceptors located in tendons.
What do GTO’s do?
Inhibit muscle activation to protect against the development of excessive tension.
