Cardiovascular System Flashcards
The atria deliver blood into…
the ventricle.
What is the function of the ventricles?
To supply the main force for moving blood through the pulmonary and peripheral circulations.
What is the primary function of Tricuspid & Mitral Valves?
To prevent the flow of blood from the ventricles back into the atria.
Systole
Ventricular contraction.
What do the Aortic & Pulmonary Valves do?
Prevent backflow from the aorta and pulmonary arteries into the ventricles.
Diastole
Ventricular relaxation.
Myocardium
Heart muscle.
What do the Sympathetic & Parasympathetic Nervous Systems do?
Transmit signals to the heart from the medulla - part of the autonomic nervous system.
Bradycardia
Resting heart rate of fewer than 60 beats/min.
Tachycardia
Resting heart rate of more than 100 beats/min.
Arterial System
Carries blood away from the heart.
Venous System
Returns blood toward the heart.
Function of arteries
Rapidly transport blood pumped from the heart.
What are Arterioles?
Small branches of arteries; control vessels through which blood enters the capillaries.
Function of capillaries
To facilitate the exchange of nutrients between blood and the various tissues of the body.
