Neuromuscular Junction Flashcards
What is a neuromuscular junction
It’s where motor neurone meets a skeletal muscle
Why do we have mutiple neuromuscular junction
As all muscle fibres need to contact quickly an simultaneously and this aids survival
What is a motor unit
All uncle fibres that are supplied by a single motor neurone and they act together as a unit
What does a large force for contraction need
A large number of muscle units to be stimulated
Neuromuscular junction similarities with cholinergic synapse
Neurotransmitter -transported by diffusion
Receptors - neurotransmitter bind to causing Na+ to diffuse in
Sodium potassium pumps - repolarises the axon
Enzymes - hydrolyse the neurotransmitter
Differences wit neuromuscular junction
- Only excitatory
- neurone only linked to muscle
- motor neurones involved
- action potential ends
- acetylcholine binds to receptors on membrane of muscle fibre
