Neuromuscular Disorders Part 1 Flashcards
What is the definition of NMD?
term encompassing many different diagnoses that directly (myopathy) or indirectly (neuropathy) impair function of skeletal muscle
Where are NMD usually located ?
ventral horn of SC, peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junction
What is the primary symptom of NMD?
reduced strength due to decreased effective ms mass and degeneration of ms
muscle fatigue and exercise intolerance
What is important to remember about diagnosis of NMD?
it can range from early to adulthood, complete independence or dependence, months to years, proximal to distal or vice versa
What is cause of NMD?
genetic mutation, not due to injury, illness or environmental factors
What are additional signs and sx of NMD?
cramping, twtiching, muscle wasting, joint pain, hypotonia
What is pseudo hypertrophy?
muscle appears to be big but its mostly fat not muscle
What is most common form of NMD in adult?
Myotonic Dystrophy type 1, Steinert’s
inability to relax muscle following sudden contraction
What is most common NMD in children?
Duchenne muscular dystrophy
What is most common cause of death for NMD?
cardiopulmonary complications
What are additional impairments of NMD?
cognitive, swallowing, contractures, osteoporosis, sensation (maybe)
What system are usually intact?
bowel/bladder, sexual function
What is common lab value used to diagnose NMD?
Creatine kinase, elevated indicative of ms damage due to injury, NMD or cardiac problems
Why can immunosuppressants help with NMD?
reduce inflammation
Why are anticonvulsants or anti depressants used with NMD?
pain of neuropathy
