Neuromuscular Concepts Flashcards
Part of the nervous system that includes the brain and spinal cord
Central Nervous System
Part of the nervous system that innervates smooth muscle (involuntary muscle)
Autonomic Nervous System
Part of the nervous system that innervates skeletal muscle (voluntary muscle)
Somatic Nervous System
Part of the nervous system activated during the “fight-or-flight” situations (and exercise)
Sympathetic Nervous System
Part of the nervous system that slows the heart rate
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Part of the nerve cell that transmits a neve impulse away from the cell body
Axon
Neurons that supply skeletal muscle fibers causing them to contract
Motor Neurons
(Sensory neurons transmit information from peripheral sensory receptors to the brain)
Part of the nerve cell that transmits a nerve impulse toward the cell body
Dendrites
Electrical energy self-propagated along an axon
Nerve Impulse
What is laid down in segments with small gaps in between called nodes of Ranvier which help speed up nerve conduction.
Myelin Sheaths
Thin Protein that is the active component in the muscular contractile process
Actin
Extensions of the myosin filament that that help ratchet the sliding filament mechanism
Cross-Briges
