Neurology Pharmacology Flashcards

1
Q

Explain the physiology behind seizure drugs.

A
  • seizures are caused by uncontrolled electrolytes crossing the neuro membrane
  • anti-seizure meds block holes in the membrane, slowing the entry of electrolytes

5 nursing pro tips

A
  • purpose: treatment of seizures
  • classification: anticonvulsant
  • nursing pro tips:
    1. NEVER mix with D5W – will revert to powder form when mixed; stop infusion and flush port with NS
    2. typically pts will be on med for life
    3. adverse effects = unsteady gait, rash, diplopia, bleeding gums
    4. therapeutic range = 10 - 20 mcg/mL
