Neurology Flashcards
Ascending acute symmetrical lower motor neuron paralysis
Guillain-barre syndrome
pattern of paralysis in guillain-barre syndrome
distal spreading proximal
Abnormal fatigable weakness of muscle, rapidly weakening with use
myesthenia gravis
Cause of myesthenia gravis
complement/antibody autoimmune blockade of Ach receptors
Lower motor neuron paralysis with accompanying lymphocytic meningitis; possibly causing respiratory failure due to intercostal muscle paralysis
Poliomyelitis
diffuse immunologically mediated connective tissue disorder causing inflammatory change in muscles; insidious onset of difficulty climbing stairs or rising from chair
polymyositis
Disseminated acute demyelinating disease with headache, fever, confusion, meningitis associated with multifocal brain and spinal cord signs; flaccid paralysis
acute disseminated encephalomyelitis
Nerve roots involved: elbow and forearm extension; pronation and wrist flexion
C5 and C6 nerve roots (Erb palsy)
classic porter tip posture
erb palsy (c5 C6)
Claw hand deformity
Klumpke paralysis (C8 and T1)
Classic triad of miosis, partial ptosis, loss of hemifacial swelling
Horner Syndrome
Demyelinating disorder presenting as upper motor neuron signs
multiple sclerosis
Upper lobe neoplasm causing pain in arm and shoulder d/t nerve root involvement
Pancoast syndrome
Constricted pupil, ptosis, anhydrosis of face
Horner syndrome
