Hematology Flashcards
Reticulocyre count in hemolytic anemia
normal to mildly increased
Haptoglobin in hemolytic anemia
decreased
Autoimmune disease where IgG autoantibodies against platelets, sometimes together with C3b, sensitize platelets for destruction
Acute idiopathic (immune) thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)
Autoimmune thrombocytopenia can be secondary to the ff;
SLE; immunodeficiency disorders, B-lymphocyte neoplasms
Initial therapy in bleeding w ITP
corticosteroids
Indication for platelet transfusion in ITP
significant bleeding or prior to emergency splenectomy
Causes of secondary polycythemia
chronic pulmonary disease and hypoxia; excessive renal or ectopic erythtopoeitin production as seen in renal tumors
