What is the difference between typical headaches and migraines?
headache: vascular
migraine: neurologic
What is a visual aura?
visual or sensory display before a headache or migraine; shimmery appearance
What are the main symptoms of a migraine?
1) incapacitating
2) nausea/vomiting
3) sensitive to light and sound
What are the signs of a migraine aura?
vision: flashing zig zags and missing area
sensory: pins and needles, numbness
motor: heaviness of limb (sometimes)
trouble speaking
What are the 4 stages of a migraine?
1) prodrome: 1-2 days before the following migraine stages; vague “odd” feeling
2) aura: right before headache
3) headache: often one-sided, throbbing
4) postdrome: vague lethargy, confusion, difficulty with recognition, sluggishness
What is involved in a migraine for surface cortical spreading depression?
aura (grey matter/neurons)
What is involved in a migraine for interior cortex cortical spreading depression?
no aura (white matter/axons)
Which nerve is responsible for meningeal irritation (pain) in a headache? or migraine?
trigeminal (CN V)
Which patient population has a higher incidence of migraines?
30-50 y/o women
What are the common types of headaches?
sinus: pain behind browbone and cheekbones
cluster: pain in and around one eye
tension: pain is like a band squeezing head
migraine: pain, nausea, visual changes on one half of head
