Neurological examination of the eye Flashcards
1
Q
What is the order of examination?
A
- Inspect
- Assess visual acuity
- Corneal light reflex
- Pupillary reactions (direct, indirect and accommodation)
- Diagnostic position testing
2
Q
What should you comment on during inspection?
A
- symmetry
- size
- inflammation
- cysts
- swellings
- irregularities
- excess watering or exudate
- facial features/drooping of eyelids
Thoroughly describes: - eyebrows
- eyelashes
- eyelids
- cornea/pupil
3
Q
What should you ask for visual acuity?
A
- current vision and visual difficulties
- use of glasses and contact lenses
- patterns of vision loss
4
Q
Which cranial nerves are being tested during corneal light reflex?
A
CN III, IV, VI
5
Q
What are the possible results from a corneal light reflex test?
A
normal - symmetrical reflection of light in both eyes
abnormal - asymmetric corneal light reflex, esotropia and exotropia
6
Q
Which cranial nerves are being tested in pupillary reactions?
A
CN II and III
7
Q
What do you need to comment on during pupillary reactions?
A
- constriction of same sided pupil
- simultaneous constriction of the other pupil
- PEARL: pupils are equal and reactive to light
8
Q
Which cranial nerves are being tested in diagnostic position testing?
A
CN III, IV, VI
9
Q
What do you need to comment on during diagnostic position testing?

- parallel tracking of object with both eyes
- presence of nystagmus (shaking)
