What questions should you ask your patient before commencing blood pressure readings?
Enquire about previous BP measurements, which arm is preferred, if they have had anything to drink eat or smoke in the last 15-20mins, if they have done any physical activity in the last 15-20mins
What is the correct positioning for the client when taking BP in a seated position?
Feet flat on the floor, arm rested/supported at heart level, client calm and relaxed
Where will you find the brachial pulse?
At the antecubital fossa, medial to biceps tendon
How far above the antecubital fossa should the cuff be placed?
2 fingers
How is an approximate systolic reading obtained?
Palpation of radial pulse while inflating/deflating cuff for the first time
How high should the cuff be inflated?
20-30 mmHg above the approx. systolic reading gained from taking the radial pulse
What is the purpose of taking BP?
Checking for hypotension and hypertension, which can be indicators of certain conditions
What is the normal healthy range for BP?
100-139/60-89
What is the positioning for assessing a client for orthostatic hypotension?
Lying down on their back, arms resting on the side, feet not crossed, client calm and relaxed
What is orthostatic hypotension?
A form of low blood pressure that occurs when a person stands or sits up quickly from a laying down position, which can cause dizziness, lightheadedness and fainting.
