What do you need to comment on when inspecting the head and neck?
- size and shape of the head
- symmetry of bony structures (nose, ears, jaw line, facial features)
- symmetry of muscle structure (eyelids, muscles of the face and cheek
- skin colour (is there flushing?)
- general appearance and facial expressions
- presence or absence of any swellings or deformities
When doing palpation of the head and neck, where should you palpate?
the scalp and TMJ (temporomandibular joint)
What are you assessing for in palpation of the head and neck
- pain
- tenderness

- rigidity of facial muscles
what are the names of the 3 paranasal sinuses?
- Frontal
- maxillary
- ethmoid
What is the location of the frontal paranasal sinus?
in the frontal bone, above and medial to the orbits
What is the location of the maxillary paranasal sinus?
in the maxilla along the side walls of nasal cavity
What is the location of the ethmoid paranasal sinus?
between the orbits
where is the temporal pulse?
above the zygomatic (cheek) bone, between the eye and top of the ear
where is the carotid pulse?
medial to the sternomastoid muscle in the neck
What are you commenting on when doing an inspection of the external ears?
- size
- symmetry
- swelling

- lesions

What are you commenting on when palpating the external ear?
- temperature
- pain

What should you comment on during an otoscope examination?
- tympanic membrane: should be pearly grey with no signs of exudate
- umbo: located at 12 o’clock in both ears
- cone of light: right ear = 5 o’clock
left ear = 7 o’clock
