Neurological Emergencies Flashcards
What are the types of convulsive disorders?
Febrile seizures, Generalized (tonic/clonic/absent), Partial (focal), Pseudoseizures, Status epilepticus
What is the management for convulsive disorders?
Protect from injury, airway management, treat underlying causes, medications as needed
What are the types of headaches?
Migraine, Tension, Cluster
What is the management for headaches?
Pain control, hydration, dim lights, and avoid triggers
What are the types of cerebrovascular disorders?
Ischemic stroke (thrombotic vs embolic), Hemorrhagic stroke, TIA, Syncope
What assessment tools are used for stroke?
LAMS Score, Cincinnati Prehospital Stroke Scale
What is the management for cerebrovascular disorders?
Identify onset time, rapid transport, manage ABCs, IV access, BGL check, oxygen if needed
What are examples of chronic neurological disorders?
Alzheimer’s, ALS, Bell’s palsy, Cerebral palsy, MS, Muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s, Trigeminal neuralgia, Myasthenia gravis, Peripheral neuropathy
What is the management for chronic neurological disorders?
Supportive care, symptomatic treatment, transport as needed
What are the types of infectious disorders?
Encephalitis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, Meningitis
What is the management for infectious disorders?
Infection control, ABC support, transport, possible antibiotics
What are the types of tumors in neurological disorders?
Brain abscesses, Neoplasms
What is the management for tumors?
Monitor for increased ICP, airway support, transport for further evaluation
What are the types of trauma in neurological conditions?
Spinal cord injury, Neurogenic shock
What is the management for trauma?
Spinal immobilization, shock management, IV fluids, rapid transport
What are the types of pediatric conditions?
Down syndrome, Hydrocephalus, Spina bifida
What is the management for pediatric conditions?
Symptom management, airway considerations, transport
What are the types of abnormal breathing patterns?
Kussmaul, Cheyne-Stokes, Ataxic, Agonal, Apnea
What is the management for abnormal breathing patterns?
Identify underlying cause, oxygen support, ventilation if needed
What should be assessed in a physical exam for neurological conditions?
LOC, Pupils, Speech, Motor function, Sensation, Posturing
What is the management after a physical exam in neurological conditions?
Monitor changes, transport for definitive care
