History of epilepsy or seizure disorder can certify if:
- Off medication & seizure free for 10 years
*recommend to have driver apply for exemption rather than take on liability
Unprovoked Seizures
Driver should be off medication and seizure free > 5 years
*2nd seizure would constitute epilepsy
Seizure Exemption Requirements
- Driver maintains treatment regimen and is seizure free for 2 year exemption
- Annual reports from treating MD
- Annual medical exams
Seizure Exemption: Epilepsy
- Seizure free on/off medication for 8 years
- Stable medication for 2 years
Max cert: 1 year
Seizure Exemption: Single Unprovoked Seizure
- Seizure free on/off meds for 4 years
- Stable meds for 2 years
Max cert: 2 years
Seizure Exemption: Single Provoked Seizure (low risk)
Low Risk:
- Meds
- LOC < 30 minutes
- Non-penetrating head injury
- Metabolic derangement
- Alcohol/Drug withdrawal
Max Cert: 1 year
Seizure Exemption: Single Provoked Seizure (Moderate/High Risk)
Moderate/High Risk:
- LOC > 30 minutes
- Penetrating head injury
- ICH (Stroke)
- Brain infections
- Post-operative
- Seizure free on/off meds x 8 years
- Meds stable x 2 years
Max cert: 1 year
Febrile Seizures: Certification Period
2 years
Mild TBI
- No dural penetration
- LOC < 30 minutes
Moderate TBI
- No dural penetration
- LOC > 30 minutes but < 24 hours
Severe TBI
- Penetrates dura
- LOC > 24 hours
- High risk for unprovoked seizures
Do NOT certify
Moderate TBI w/o Seizures
Mild TBI w. Seizures
Waiting period
Minimum 2 years seizure free and off meds
Moderate TBI w/ seizures waiting period
Minimum 5 years seizure free and off meds
TBI Certification Period
1 year certification for:
- Mild TBI w/ Seizures
- Moderate TBI w/ or w/o seizures
2 year certification for:
- Mild TBI w/o seizures
Severe TBI Certification
