Name the three stages of a seizure.
Prosomal stage, ictus stage, postictal stage.
What is cataplexy?
The sudden loss of muscle tone, can be confused with a seizure.
What might owners confuse with a seizure?
Syncope, vestibular attacks, narcolepsy, neuromuscular weakness
If an owner suspects a seizure, and during history taking informs you it happened on a walk, what is it likely to be?
Syncope, happens during exercise, no muscle contractions, loss of consciousness.
If an owner suspects a seizure and during history taking tells you it happened while he was eating, what else could it be?
Narcolepsy.
When might phenobarbitone be contraindicated in a dog? What could you use it in conjunction with to reduce the dose required?
If dog has liver disease. Causes raised liver enzymes and monitoring is needed. Potassium bromide can be used on food, not metabolised in liver.
What drug is used to treat status epilepticus in cats? What else can it be used for in low doses?
Diazepam, an appetite stimulant.
