Neuroglia Flashcards
Where are neuroglia found?
They are found in the CNS and PNS
What are the four types of neuroglia?
Astrocytes, Oligodendrocytes, Microglia, and Ependymal
What are astrocytes?
They secrete chemicals vital to the blood brain barrier. They perform repairs in damaged neural tissue
What are oligodendrocytes?
They can wrap around axons (make myelin)
What does myelin do?
Myelin increases speed of action potential
How do myelinated neurons appear?
They appear white and unmyelinated neurons appear gray
What are microglia?
They are phagocytes derived from white blood cells
What are ependymal?
They are found in fluid filled cavities and can produce cerebrospinal fluid
What is one fact about Schwann cells?
They cover all axons outside the CNS (myelinated and unmyelinated)
