Membrane Potential Flashcards
How is the membrane potential determined?
It is determined when the cell membrane is at rest
What else is the membrane potential known as?
It is also known as the resting potential (-70mV)
What is intracellular?
Higher concentration of K+ (potassium) and Pr- (negatively charged proteins)
What is extracellular?
Higher concentration of Na+ (sodium) and Cl- (chloride ions)
What is the cell membrane’s role in this?
The cell membrane keeps this balanced by diffusion
What is true of the cell membrane?
The cell membrane is more permeable to K+ than Na+
What is true about potassium?
Potassium diffuses out faster than sodium coming in
What is true about resting potential?
Any change in resting potential (moving away from -70) can effect the cell
What does depolarization mean?
When the membrane potential becomes less negative (more positive)
What does hyperpolarization mean?
When the membrane potential becomes more negative
What is action potential caused by?
It is caused by depolarization (closer to zero)
