Basics Flashcards
Nervous System
What is function #1 of the nervous system?
Monitors internal and external environments
What is function #2 of the nervous system?
Integrates sensory information
What is function #3 of the nervous system?
Coordinates voluntary and involuntary responses of other organ systems
What are the 2 main divisions of the nervous system?
CNS (central nervous system) and PNS (peripheral nervous system)
What is the CNS?
It consists of the brain and spinal cord and deals with sensory data, motor commands, intelligence, memory, and emotion
What is the PNS?
Connects the CNS to the rest of the body
What is true about the PNS?
It is divided into 2 divisions
What is the afferent?
Sensory information to the CNS
What are the names of the 2 divisions of the PNS?
Afferent and efferent
What is the efferent?
Motor commands to muscle and glands
What is true about efferent?
It is split into 2 divisions
What are the names of the two divisions of the efferent?
Somatic and autonomic
What is somatic?
Skeletal muscle contractions
What is autonomic?
Smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and gland secretions
What are the names of the two divisions of the autonomic?
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
What are neurons?
Basic units of the nervous system
What are neuroglia?
Regulates environment around the neurons (sometimes called supporting cells)
What is another term for neuroglia?
Glial cells
What is one fact about neuroglia?
They are more numerous than neurons and can participate in cell division
