Neuroendocrine system Flashcards
What is the portal venous system?
Capillary bed pools into another without going through the heart; transports one region of products into another with relatively high concentration
Metabolism is regulated by the endocrine system
ok
What regulates glycogen lysis?
Epinephrine
What is gluconeogenesis regulated by?
Stimulated by catabolic hormones (GH), glucagon
What is lipolysis regulated by?
• Stimulated by epinephrine, norepinephrine, ghrelin, GH, testosterone, and cortisol
Where is GH stored, and by what?
Stored and secreted by somatotropin, in the cells of the ant pit gland
What causes gigantism?
Pituitary tumours press on somatrotroph cells which secretes GH in gradually increasing amounts
Mechanisms by which height is regulated
Stimulation of cell division; or multiplication of cartilage chondrocytes; the amount of GH decreases with age
