Neurodynamics Flashcards
What are tension points?
Where there is no movement of nervous system
Where are the tension points?
C6, T6, L4, posterior knee, anterior elbow
Double Crush Injury
proximally compressed nerve trunk makes a nerve vulnerable to a secondary distal lesion
Example of double crush injury
neck pain from foraminal stenosis followed by elbow/wrist pain
Reverse Double Crush Injury
distal neural compression secondarily affects the proximal elements of the nerve tract
Example of reverse double crush
CTS followed by elbow pain
Contraindications for neurodynamic testing
Tethered Cord Syndrome
Spinal Cord Injury
Cauda Equina Lesion
Recent Neuro Changes
Malignancy
Instability of vertebral column
Recent worsening of neuro symptoms
Unstable disc lesion
Precautions when neurodynamic testing
Irritable and severe dysfunction (acute nerve root)
Unstable condition
Elderly
Cause dizziness
Pathologies affecting nervous system
Circulatory disturbances
Pregnancy
Passive SLR technique
0-30 - takes up slack on sciatic nerve
30-70 - tension on spinal nerves, dural sleeve, and NR L4-S2
> 70 - tension on soft tissues and nerves
If symptoms occur at < 50 deg (SLR), this indicates?
Disc pathology
If symptoms occur at > 50 deg (SLR), this indicates?
Sciatica
(+) Slump indicates?
Neck and foot (+) = dura mater
Only foot (+) = LE quarter nerves
Prone Knee Bend tests for which nerve?
Femoral nerve
ULNT 1 - Base
90 deg elbow FLEX, 90-110 deg shoulder ABD
Depress the scapula
Forearm supinated, wrist and finger EXT
Slowly extend elbow
Contralateral cervical sidebend
ULNT 2A - Median N.
Depress scapula w/ thigh
ER shoulder and Extend elbow
Supinate forearm, and extend wrist, fingers, thumb
Slowly abduct shoulder
Contralateral cervical sidebend
