Neurocritical care and drugs Flashcards
How does labetalol work?
selective alpha blocker, beta non-selective
What is thiopental?
short acting barbiturate
How do NSAIDS work?
Inhibiting COX - cyclooxygenase - Which participates in the synthesis of prostaglandins and thromboxanes
What is different about aspirin compared to other NSAIDs in its interaction with cyclooxygenase?
aspirin binds irreversibly - which is why you have to wait 8-10 days for it’s anti-platelet function to wear off
What is the Cockroft gault equation?
how to work out creatinine clearance
[140-age] x ideal weight / 72 x serum creatinine (x.85 in females)
How does tramadol work?
Weak opioid - binds to mu-receptors and inhibits re-uptake centrally of norad and serotonin
What is tryptophan?
serotonin pre-cursor
