Neuro Screen Flashcards
Neurological screen versus exam
Neurologic screen- rule in or out need for more comprehensive examination
Exam- in the case of a known neurological diagnosis
Neurologic screen
Differentiate between lower motor neuron pathology (radiculopathy) and upper motor neuron pathology, (spinal cord compression stroke)
Determine source and location of Neurologic dysfunction (sensory motor reflex testing)
Assist in differential diagnosis
Motor element of the Neurologic screen
Observe muscle bulk
Check myotomes
Resistance to passive stretch
Myotome versus dermatome
Myotome is the muscles or muscle groups, innervated by single spine root usually performing similar actions
Dermatome region of skin who sensory information is received by a single spinal nerve root
C5 myotome
Shoulder abduction
C6 myotome
Elbow flexion
C7 myotome
Elbow extension
C8 myotome
Finger flexion or thumb abduction (grip)
T1 myotome
Finger abduction
L2, L3 myotome
Hip flexors
L3, L4 myotome
Knee extensors
L4 myotome
Ankle dorsiflexor’s
L5 myotome
Hallux extension
S1 myotome
Ankle plantar flexors
C5 dermatomes
Lateral anti-cubital fossa proximal to the elbow
C6 dermatome
Dorsal surface of the proximal phalanx of thumb
C7 dermatome
Dorsal surface of the proximal phalanx middle finger
C8 dermatome
Dorsal surface of the proximal phalanx little finger
T1 dermatome
Medial antecubital, fossa, proximal to elbow
L2 dermatome
Anterior medial thigh at midpoint, drawn on imaginary line, connecting midpoint of the inguinal ligament and medial femoral condyle
L3 dermatome
medial femoral condyle of knee
L4 dermatome
Over medial malleolus
L5 dermatomes
Dorsum of the foot at third metatarsal phalangeal joint
S1 dermatome
Lateral aspect of the calcaneus
S2 dermatome
Midpoint of popliteal fossa
Biceps brachii reflex
C5
Brachioradialis reflex
C6
Triceps reflex
C7
Patellar reflex
L2-L4
Achilles reflex
