Neuro-Muscluar System Flashcards
What are the three types of muscle fibres
–Slow oxidate (type i)
–Fast oxidate (type iia)
–Fast glycolytic (type iib)
Characteristics of type 1 muscle fibres
–Slow contraction speed
–Don’t fatigue as quickly
Used by endurance athletes
Characteristics of a fast twitch muscle fibres
–Fast contraction speed
–High force of contraction
–Fatigue faster
Used for short intense bursts mostly anaerobic
Example of athlete who has type iia muscle type
1500m runner
More resistant to fatigue, bursts of energy is needed
Example of athlete who has type iib muscle type
100m Sprinter
Fatigue quicker used for explosive events
What is the effect of training on fibre type
Is genetically determined, but training results in hypertrophy of muscle fibres so there’s greater strength in muscles
Define motor unit
A motor neurone and its muscle fibres
Motor neurones
Nerve cells which transmit the brain’s instructions as electrical impulses to the muscles
Define neuromuscular Junction
Where the motor neurone and the muscle fibres meet
