Neuro Imaging Flashcards
Brain imaging modalities?
CT and MRI
Advantages of Computer Tomography
Fast and good for trauma situations and imaging fractures/brain bleeds
Disadvantages of Computer Tomography
Can’t detect acute ischemic stroke
Lower resolution of brain
What does an Epidural hematoma look like on CT?
Elliptical shape/lemon shape
Epidural hematoma sequence of events
Head trauma
Loss of consciousness
Lucid
Unconscious again
What does a Subdural hematoma look like on CT?
Banana/crescent shape and possible brain tissue herniation
Advantages of Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Highest resolution, good for soft tissue lesions
Disadvantages of Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Slow, no metal implants except aneurysm clips, sensitive to motion, not good for bone lesions
What are the types of different sequences for MRI?
T1, T2, T2-FLAIR
What are the qualities of a T1 MRI?
White matter is white
Grey matter is grey
CSF and inflammation are dark
What are the qualities of a T2 MRI?
White matter is dark
Grey matter is light
CSF and inflammation are bright
What is a T2 MRI good for?
Seeing demyelination
What are the qualities of a T2-FLAIR MRI?
Same as normal T2 except that CSF is now dark in order to visualize inflammation near the ventricles
What does a functional MRI do?
Maps out brain activity by detecting changes in blood flow
What is contrast used to see?
Disruptions in the BBB
