Neuro Exam Flashcards
Upper motor neurons
nerve cells bodies for motor pathways. All begin and end in CNS. Can only affect mov’t through lower mov’t neurons
Lower moron neurons
Cranial and spinal motor neurons. Originate in spinal cord and extend into PNS. Transmit neural signals directly to muscles.
Autonomic nervous system
Involuntary portion of PNS. Functions below level of consciousness.
Voluntary nervous system (aka somatic nervous system)
Voluntary portion of PNS.
GCS
Used to assess quality of consciousness and function of cerebral cortex. Severe <13, no deficits=15
Dermatomes
Sensory or motor fibers of each spinal nerve that supply and receive information in a specific body distribution
Myotome
Term used to discuss motor functions of a dermatome
Doll’s reflex
Evaluate brainstem injury. Positive sign=eyes follow to side that head is moved.
Kernig Sign
Meningitis
Brudzinski sign
Meningitis
Gower sign
Muscle dystrophy. Roll to position that can push self up with arms
Clonus
Repetitive, rhythmic contractions of muscle.
Receptive/Wernicke aphasia
Word salad
Expressive/Broca aphasia
Unable to get words out
