Neuro anatomy pt 1 Flashcards
What is the function of the central nervous system
To integrate and control center
What is the function of Peripheral nervous system
Communicate with CNS and the rest of the body.
What is the function of the sensory division
Conducts impulses receptors to the CNS
What is the function of the Automatic nervous system
Conducts impulses from CNS to cardiac, muscles and glans
What is the Sympathetic division
Mobilizing the body during activity
What is the parasympathetic division
To conserve energy and promote house-keeping functions at rest.
What is the Diencephalon composed on
Thalamus,Hypothalamus and epithalamus
What is the brain stem composed of
midbrain,pons,medulla
What is gray matter composed of
Non-myelinated neurons,neuron cell bodies
What is white matter composed of
Myelinated axons and some that are not
What do ventricles of the brain contain
They contain CSF and ependymal cells
What does the cerebral cortex allow
To perceive, communicate, remember, understand ,appreciate and voluntary movement.
What are the 3 functional areas of the cerebral cortex
Motor,sensory, association
What is contralateral
When each hemisphere does what the opposite side function.
Also, it is motor innervation
What is lateralization
Specialization of the cortical function
What are pyramidal cells
They are large neurons that allow control of skeletal muscles.
What happens when you have a stroke
Voluntary movements were lost, but reflex contraction is still possible.
What is the function of primary motor cortex
The role of the primary motor cortex is to generate neural impulses that control the execution of movement.
What is the function of the Premotor cortex (3)
Plan movements by selecting and sequencing basic motor movements into complex tasks, coordinate movements and can control voluntary actions that DEPEND on sensory feed back
What is the Broca area
Specialized in speech and preparation of speaking.
What is the frontal eye field
Controls voluntary movements
What is the primary somatosensory cortex
Receives info from somatic sensory receptors and proprioceptors.
What does the somatosensory association cortex do
integrate and analyze somatic imput, meaning you don’t need to look to know what it is.
What does the primary visual cortex do
map of the visual space of the retina , receives and integrates .
What does the visual association area do
Interprets visual images based on prior experience ( face recognition)
What does the primary auditory cortex do
Sound is evaluated for pitch, loudness and rhythm.
What does the auditory association area do
interpretation based on memory (speech words etc)
What is the function of the vestibular cortex
Awareness of balance
What does the olfactory cortex do
Awareness of smell.
What does the gustatory cortex do?
Aware of different taste
What does the Visceral sensory area do
Aware of the things inside your body ( digestion etc.)
What is the function of the multimodal association
receives inputs and sends multiple output in areas
What is the function of the anterior association area (Prefrontal cortex)
Intellect, complex learning, recall and personality. It also is part of the abstract like ideas, judgment and concern. It matures slowly.
What is the function of the posterior association area
Stores complex memories with sensory input. Localizing of self and surroundings of space. Recongnition of patters and understanding of written and spoken language.
What is the function of the limbic association area
Emotional impact, sense danger based on prior experience.
What is cerebral dominance
Hemisphere that is dominant for language
What is the function of cerebral white matter
Communicatio between cortex and lower CNS
What are commissural fibres
the connection between the two hemisphere.
What is the largest fibre that connects the two hemispheres
Corpus callosum
What are the association fibres
They connect within the hemisphere.
What are projection fibres
They connect with the cortex and the rest of the nervous system.
What are the basal nuclei composed of
The caudate nucleus, putamen and globus pallidus
What is the function of the basal nuclei
Motor function directed by primary motor cortex. Responsible for the intensity ,starting and stopping of the movement. (Also with emotions I guess)
What are the three parts of the diencephalon
Thalamus,hypothalamus and epithalamus ( 3rd ventricule)
What is the interthalamic adhesion
The midline that holds the thalamus
What is the function of the thalamus
sorting and editing information. It plays a role in sensations, motor activities ,cortical arousal, learning and memory.
What are the main function of the hypothalamus
Automatic control center
Center of emotion response
body temperature regulation
regulation of food intake
regulation of water balance
regulation of sleep cycles
control of endocrine system
What is the function of the epithalamus
Can send pineal gland, in other words melatonin.
