Neuro anatomy - protection of CNS Flashcards
What anatomical protection measures does the brain have
Bony enclosure- the skull
Membranes- meninges & dural septa
Watery cushion- cerebrospinal fluid
Blood brain barrier
What is the meninges
Cover and protect the CNS
Protect blood vessels and enclose venous sinuses
Form partitions between major divisions of the brain
Anchor the brain the skull to reduce movement
Form a barrier between the skull and brain and the vertebral foramina and the spinal cor
What are the 3 layers of connective tissue
The dura matter forms the outer layer. It has a tough, double layered leathery membrane. It lines the spaces between the major divisions of the brain
The Arachnoid matter is the middle layer that loosely cover the brain.
The Pia matter is the inner layer made of delicate connective tissue that clings tightly to the brain
What are the ventricles of the brain
4 irregular shaped cavities containing cerebrospinal fluid
What is the cerebrospinal fluid
clear fluid containing water, mineral salt, glucose, plasma proteins, creatinine.
It protects the brain and spinal cord by acting as a cushion and shock absorber. It also acts as a medium for the exchange of nutrients and waste products
The presence of blood in the CSF indicates brain bleeding
Label the diagraph of the ventricles
What is the blood brain barrier
Assists in maintaining a stable internal environment for the brain- Homeostasis
