Symptoms and signs of temporal arteritis

A

Symptoms

  • headache often present for 2-3 months
  • jaw claudiction
  • malaise
  • shoulder girdle pain and stiffness (polymyalgia rheumatica)
  • visual disturbance, often transient monocular blindness

Examination findings

  • fever
  • tender temporal artery
  • enlarged temporal artery
  • ischaemic changes of the tongue or scalp
