- atrial fibrillation, bacterial endocarditis, myocardial infarction (emboli)
- Haematological disease
- family history of stroke

Symptoms and signs of temporal arteritis
A
Symptoms
- headache often present for 2-3 months
- jaw claudiction
- malaise
- shoulder girdle pain and stiffness (polymyalgia rheumatica)
- visual disturbance, often transient monocular blindness
Examination findings
- fever
- tender temporal artery
- enlarged temporal artery
- ischaemic changes of the tongue or scalp
