Neural Communication Flashcards
(17 cards)
Temporal Summation
The additive affect of high frequency inputs of a presynaptic neuron on the postsynaptic neuron
Spatial summation
The additive effect of simultaneous stimulation from multiple presynaptic neurons on a Postsynaptic neuron
Neural integration
EPSPs and IPSPs are integrated and its additive effect determines if information is passed on
Feedforward excitation
Presynaptic neuron will excite postsynaptic neuron that propagate excitation on the neuron within a circuit
Feedforward inhibition
Shut down excitation in a circuit of a downstream neuron
Feedback recurrent excitation
Presynaptic excites postsynaptic neuron, and it will feedback excitation to the presynaptic neuron
Feedback recurrent inhibition
Presynaptic neuron, excites, postsynaptic neuron that will excite inhibitory Interneurons to presynaptic, which will shut down excitation or dampen in communication train
Convergence
Several presynaptic neuron sending information to one postsynaptic neuron that will send information to other downstream neurons
Divergence
Integrated information of presynaptic, neuron dispersed to multiple postsynaptic neurons
Lateral inhibition
Neuron will inhibit neighboring neurons
Ionotropic Receptors
Ligand, gated ion channels, fast transmission
Matabotropic Ion Channels
G protein, coupled old, slower transmission for complex biological processes
Agonist
Drug that binds to same site that endogenous ligands bind, activates receptors
Antagonist
Drugs that binds to Maine receptor site, but does not activate receptor – competes with endogenous ligand – inhibit activation of receptor
Allocentric modulation
Binding of modulator to different site than endogenous ligand – creates confirmational, change in receptor, that changes binding affinity of ligand resulting in modulation of receptor, activation, by endogenous ligand
Positive – enhances activity of Nerotransmitter
Negative - decreases activity of Neurotransmitter
Nero transmitter synthesis
Allows more of transmitter to be available
Uptake
If this is stopped, it will prevent removal of Nerotransmitter from synaptic cleft
Can also be enhanced
