Network terms Flashcards
all about network terms
Nodes:
Any device connected to the network, such as computers, servers, printers, smartphones, and other networking hardware like routers and switches.
Protocols
Sets of rules that determine how data is transmitted and received over the network. Common protocols include TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP, and others.
Router
A device that forwards data packets between different networks, directing traffic efficiently.
Switch
A device that connects devices within a single network and uses MAC addresses to forward data to the correct destination.
Hub
A basic network device that connects multiple devices in a LAN, but it broadcasts data to all connected devices, not just the intended recipient
Modem
A device that modulates and demodulates signals for data transmission over telephone lines, cable systems, or satellite links.
Firewall
A network security device that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules
Bandwidth
The maximum rate of data transfer across a network path, typically measured in bits per second (bps).
TCP/IP Model
A simpler model for network communication divided into four layers: Network Interface, Internet, Transport, and Application
