Network Hardware Flashcards
What is a modem?
Transforms digital information into analogue signals to be transferred along a wire
What is a router?
Routes data between devices on a LAN or WAN
A modem is connected to one port on the router
What is a modem/router?
A piece of network hardware that spies on your family for the government.
But seriously its a modem and a router,,,, DUH
Features of a twisted pair cable?
- Made up of a pair of insulated copper wires
- Can be affected by external magnetic fields
- provides low bandwidth
- Cheap
- Used for telephone networks, data networks and cable shielding
Features of a coaxial cable?
- Made up of a conducting wire, a layer of insulation, a grounding conductor and a layer of exterior insulation
- less affected by magnetic interference then twisted pair
- Moderate bandwidth, more expensive than twisted pair only
- used for radio connections, cable TV, computer network connections and digital audio
Features of a fiber optic cable?
- Very thin optical fibers bundled into a cable
- Unaffected by electromagnetic noise
- High bandwidth
- Most expensive
- Used for long distance connections between countries, data centers and organisations transmitting lots of data
What is a network interface card?
Allows a computer to connect to a network
What is a wireless access point (WAP)?
Allows devices to wirelessly connect to a network via an ethernet cable
What is a hub?
Allows you to connect multiple devices to one network by broadcasting transmissions it receives to other devices, can lead to a network becoming flooded with traffic as it is a passive device
What is a switch?
Allows you to connect multiple devices to one network, but is an active device so only sends messages where they need to go
