Nervous Tissue:Support Cells Flashcards
What are support cells?
They are found in the CNS grouped together as “neruoglia”
What are the general functions of support cells?
-Support
-insulate
-protect neurons
What are astrocytes?
-abundant, star shaped cells
-brace neurons
-forms barrier between capillaries and neurons
-controls chemical environment of the brain
What are Microglia
-spider like phagocytes
-dispose of debris
What are Ependymal Cells?
-lines cavities from the brain and spinal cord
-assists with circulation of cerebrospinal fluid
What are Oligodendrocytes?
-wraps around nerve fibers in CNS
-produce myelin sheath
-myelin sheath in CNS is called oligodendrocytes
What are satellite cells?
-protect neuron cell bodies
What are Schwann cells?
-forms myelin sheath in PNS
What two processes happen outside the cell body?
-dendrites
-axons
What are dendrites?
-conduct impulses towards the cell body
-there can be over 100 dendrites in neurons
What are Axons?
Conduct impulses away from the cell body
-only one axon arising from ht cell body at the axon hillock
Describe Axons?
-ends in axon terminals
-axon terminals contain vesicles with neurotransmitters
-axon terminals are separated from the next neuron by a gap
What’s a synaptic cleft/gap?
-gap between adjacent neurons
What’s a synapse?
-junction between nerves
Describe Myelin sheath?
-whitish, fatty material covering axons
