-enclosed by cerebral hemispheres
-made up of thalamus, hypothalamus, and epithalamus

-surrounds the third ventricle
-rely station for sensory impulses
-transfers impulses to the correct part of the cortex for localization and interpretation

Describe the hypothalamus

-under the thalamus
-important autonomic nervous system center
-helps regulate body temperature
-controls water balance
-regulates metabolism
-houses lambic center for emotions
-regulates nearby pituitary gland
-produces 2 hormones on its own

Describe the Epithalmus

-forms the roof of the 3rd ventricle
-houses the pineal body (an endocrine gland)
-includes the choroid plexus which creates cerebrospinal fluid
