Cerebrum Flashcards
What are the regions of the brain?
-cerebral hemispheres(cerebrum)
-diencephelon
-cerebellum
-brain stem
Describe the cerebrum
-paired (left and right) superior parts of the brain
-includes more than half of the brains mass
-the surface is made up of ridges (gyri) and grooves (sulci)
What are fissures?
Deep grooves that divide the cerebrum into lobes
What are the surface lobes of the cerebrum?
-parietal lobe
-occipital lobe
-temporal lobe
-frontal lobe
What are the specialized areas of the cerebrum?
-somatic sensory area
-receives impulses from sensory input
-located in frontal lobe
What is the primary motor area functions in the cerebrum?
-sends impulses to skeletal muscles
-located in frontal lobe
what is the Broca’s area?
-involved in the ability to speak
What are the specialized senses in cerebral areas?
-gustatory area (taste)
-visual area
-auditory area
-olfactory area(smell)
What is grey matter?
-outer layer in cerebrum cortex composed mainly of neuron cell bodies
What is white matter?
-fiber tracts deep to gray matter
What is the corpus collosum?
-connects the left and right hemispheres
What is the basal nuclei?
-islands of grey matter buried within white matter
