NERVOUS TISSUE Flashcards
found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. It is
responsible for coordinating and controlling many body activities.
nervous tissue
Nervous tissue is found in the
brain, spinal cord, and nerves
the functional units of nervous tissue they perform all the
functions of the tissue.
neurons
when only one process, an axon, is present.
This type exists in early embryonic life but is rarely present in
adults.
Unipolar neuron
defined as a type of neuron that has one
dendrite and one axon, with the cell body located between
these two structures.
bipolar neuron
a type of neuron that possesses a
single axon and many dendrites (and dendritic branches),
allowing for the integration of a great deal of information from
other neurons
multipolar neuron
the point of contact and site of transmission of a nerve impulse
between a neuron and another cell, which, often, is also a neuron.
synapse
the glial cells that form the myelin sheath on axons outside
the brain
