Epithelial tissue Flashcards
1
Q
Epithelial tissue structure and function
A
- Covers body surfaces; body cavities and tubes
- Form secretory tissues (glands and their ducts)
- Are receptors (hearing, taste, smell, vision)
2
Q
Summary of the characteristics of an epithelium
A
- Cells are closely packed together and adhere to one another using junctional complexes
- Cells are polarized i.e. they have an apex (or apical surface) that opens onto an open space, lateral border and a base
- The base of the cell is firmly attached to an underlying basement membrane
3
Q
How are epithelia classified?
A
Number of cell layers
4
Q
Basement membranes fx
A
- Attachment to underlying tissue
- Separation of tissues
- Filtration
- Scaffold and guidance (repair)
- Cell signaling
5
Q
Form strong bonding/cohesions
A
Lateral surfaces
6
Q
Increase surface area for exchanges across
the basal surface of the cell to underlying
connective tissue
A
Basal surfaces
7
Q
Surface modifications
A
Microvilli, stereocilia, cilia
