Nervous sytem: L2 Spinal Cord. Flashcards
What are the number of cervical nerves?
8
What are the number of thoracic nerves?
12
What are the number of lumbar nerves?
5
How many pairs of nerves are in the spinal cord in total?
31
What is the Pia Mater?
The innermost layer of the meninges. The Pia Cellular layer firmly adheres to the surface of the spinal cord. (Soft)
What is the Dura Mater?
The thick membrane made of dense irregular connective tissue that surrounds the Brain and Spinal Cord. The outermost of the 3 layers of the membrane, meninges that protects the central nervous system.
What are the 3 meningeal layers?
Dura Mater, Arachnoid mater, Pia Mater.
What is the Cauda Equine?
Collection of nerves at the end of the spinal cord.
What is Discriminative sensation information?
Ability to tell 2 different points of touch apart.
What is the Meissner’s Corpuscle?
Consists of cutaneous nerve ending responsible for transmitting the sensations of fine, discriminative touch and vibration.
What is the Pacinian Corpuscle?
Detects pressure changes and vibration.
What type of nueron is myelinated in the spinal cord?
Pseudounipolar neurons.
What type of neurons are responsible for pain/temperature ?
Unmyleinated neurons with free nerve endings (free nerve ending)
Ends at the back of the Gray Matter.
What is the Dorsal Root Ganglion?
Bundle of cell bodies in the Dorsal Root.
How does the sensory psuedounipolar neuron split?
One goes to the great matter (synapses with other neurons) and the other to the white matter (straight to the brain)
What is convergence and what is the function?
1 sensory neuron picks up information from other neurons and then carries it to the brain.
This is done to reduce the volume of the spinal cord as there are less neurons going up to the brain.
Where is the Motor and Sensory information carried?
Motor carried forward through Ventral Roots.
Sensory carried to the back through the Dorsal Roots.
Where is the white and grey matter located in the spinal cord?
White is on the outside
Grey is on the inside.
What is Cerivcal enlargement?
Area where information goes to and from the arms.
What is Lumbar Enlargement?
Area of the spine where the information goes to and from the legs.
Where are Opoiod receptors located?
Dorsal Gray roots.
Where are the cell bodies for upper neurons located?
Precentral gyri of the cereal cortex.
Where are cells bodies of lower neurons located?
Anterior gray horns of the spinal cord
